Road Traffic of the future faces huge challenges. The volume of traffic is increasing at the same time as its environmental and ecological implications must be taken into account. In addition both the fluidity of traffic and safety factors are of great importance when considering the traffic of the future.
According to the vision of the Cooperative Traffic programme, traffic of the future will be firmly based upon ICT. Vehicles, their onboard computers and the road and street network will be able to communicate and share information with one another. This will, for example, improve road safety, as cars will receive information about dangerous places or rapidly changing weather conditions well in advance. Advances in technology should also help ease traffic jams as the system will be able to direct streams of traffic to other roads which are free-flowing.
The aim of the project is to project Finland to the forefront of applied traffic ICT - in terms of its skill in both applying and developing technology.
