The internet has changed our ways of communicating, doing work, consuming, travelling - of living out our daily lives. In the future we will see further new applications and services – yet there are many bottlenecks which slow down this progress. Problems such as unwanted internet traffic, overloaded routing systems, the limitations of both privacy policy and responsibility as well as problems in the control of confidence and reputation all limit the infrastructure of the internet and hamper the development of constructive services built upon it.
The central aim of the Future Internet programme is to create a technology base, which is both flexible and effective. We want the net to form a basis for transparent and effective market for new innovations and applications.
The Future Internet programme is focussed on:
• The health of the routing system
• An improvement in the quality of end-to-end connectivity
• Investigating new ways of information storage and delivery
The second research phase began in June 2009 and will continue until the end of 2010. In addition to continuing to build on the main focal points of the first period, the second phase also seeks to focus on information security and the future of the internet – such as the control of unwanted internet traffic, a swifter and more astute ability to notice non-normal situations as well as the skill to both control and benefit from confidence and a good reputation.
